Event of the Month: SALAKAPAT

.gifOr tarn kuay salak in Northern Dialect: During the Buddhist lent, there is a tradition in the Northern temples called tarn kuay salak. This ancient rite was started early in the Buddhist era. In the Lanna region this tradition has always been held in most temples except those where the Mahachart Ceremony is performed.

The reasons for holding this ceremony during Buddhist Lent are:

 1.

Villagers are free from work in the paddy fields.

 2.

It’s the time when local fruits are ripe.

 3.

It’s the rainy season when the villagers do not travel.

 4.

The monks stay in their temples during Lent.

 5.

It brings good luck to kuay salak donors.

 6.

It brings in money to maintain the temples.

.gifThe word salak means – ‘draw–ticket.’ And kuay means ‘bamboo basket.’ Buddhists put offerings in the kuay and take it to the temple. At major temples, monks from many smaller temples are invited to attend. In the ceremony the monks draw the salak which matches their kuay number. There are two kinds of kuay; the first is small, and offers merit to the spirits of dead relatives. The second is big, and brings the good things of life to the donor.

.gifEach organizing temple has its own style and tradition of tarn kuay salak. The ceremony is held on days during the last week of September and the first of October.
