LES JEUX SONT FAITS (1947)

by Jean Delannoy with Micheline Presle • Marcel Pagliero •Fernand Fabre • B&W • 91 mn

Eve and Pierre are killed in different locations but at the same time. They learn to know and love each other in the afterlife. They get a second chance to go back to ordinary life so they can prove their absolute love. But can they put their pasts behind them ? Jean Delannoy’s represented Jean-Paul Sartre first screen work. There is no surprise, and the film is drenched with existentialist philosophy, but overall it works best as a romantic tragedy.

Tue, September 9 - Fri, September 12:
SOUS LES TOITS DE PARIS (1930)

by Rene Clair with Albert Prejean • Pola Illery • Edmond T. Greville Bill Bocket • Gaston Modot • B&W • 96 mn

Rene Clair’s Under the Roofs of Paris is one of the first French films shot in sound. The film is a relaxed melodrama in which a Parisian street singer and his friend pursue the love of the same woman. Clair choses to use sound only when needed, preferring to tell the story through his visuals than through his dialogue. The result is a striking film, boasting beautiful photography and sets, as well as a moving story.

Tue, September 16 - Fri, September 19:
LE PLAISIR (1952)

by Max Ophuls with Claude Dauphin • Gaby Morlay • Madeleine Renaud • Ginette Leclerc • Jean Gabin • Danielle Darrieux • B&W • 97 mn

Three short stories by Maupassant in which the moral message of them all is stated at the end of the third story: love is joyful, love is sad.

Tue, September 23 - Fri, September 26:
LES MISERABLES (1933) [Part One]

by Raymond Bernard with Harry Baur • Marthe Mellot • Charles Vanel • Charles Dullin • Jean Servais • Odette Florelle • B&W • 305 mn

Les Miserables is perhaps the French novel most frequently staged as a film. This 1933 version of Victor Hugo’s classic is the most epic in proportions, though the human elements of the story are kept in sharp focus by director Raymond Bernard. The various stages of Valjean’s life-from convict to businessman to elderly martyr were bounded by this film in three parts. Part One, Tempete sous un Crane, runs two hours. Part Two, Les Thenardiers, and Part Three, Liberte, Liberte Cherie lasting 90 and 95 minutes respectively, will be shown next week and the week after.
