H.M. the Queen’s Birthday and Mothers’ Day
Queen Sirikit’s birthday on 12 August is a nationwide public holiday, celebrated in the whole Kingdom as Mother’s Day. On this day, public buildings throughout Thailand are decorated with the Queen’s portrait and garlanded with flowers and many colored lights. All around the country the Thai people, businesses and local organizations, raise flags and portraits of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit.
Queen Sirikit was born on 12 August 1932, and has captured the hearts of the people through her devotion to improving their welfare and well-being. She is perhaps best known for her efforts in reviving many of Thailand’s folk arts and crafts. Her Majesty’s SUPPORT Foundation (Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques) has expanded progressively since its establishment in 1976 to include craft shops in the city and popular tourist areas, and two Thai Folk Arts and Crafts Training Centers at Chitralada Villa and at Bangsai in Ayutthaya.
As a tribute to the Queen’s contributions to the well-being of the nation’s citizens and especially the underprivileged, 12th August has been declared Mothers’ Day and a public holiday. The Chiang Mai Tourist Guide Magazine joins the people of Thailand in wishing Her Majesty a joyously happy birthday.
