Mind Over MatterText: GM
For centuries these creepy crawlers have served as a scrumptious treat and valuable source of protein for farmers in the Northeast. The truth is, pound for pound, these prawns of the land match the nutrition of freshwater fish and prawns. They’ve now become a staple snack among urbanites, with a plethora of vendor trays displaying the glistening, oil-laced edible insects. Let’s get a closer look!
Subterranean or Flying Ant (maeng man)
Ants evolved from wasp-like ancestors in the mid-Cretaceous period between 110 and 130 million years ago. These winged pests are no match for the hungry farmer. Just stand under any street lamp at the beginning of the rainy season and hold your hat out.
Grasshopper (tak ga tan)
Farmers found a solution to this pesky, rice crop nuisance. Fried grasshoppers are crunchy and light and taste great with a little soy sauce. Especially as a late night snack!
Cricket (jing reed)
One of the most commonly found bug bites, this one is also best enjoyed fried with a little salt. Stay strong and fit for travel by stocking up on minerals and protein with this local snack. Big and small!
Water Strider (maeng da)
Mmmm, what is this delicious paste I’m eating? Steam these water striders; grind them into a paste with a bit of chili and dive in with some sticky rice. Would you even know what you were eating if nobody told you? (They look a bit like … cockroaches !!!)
Bamboo Worm (rot deuan)
One of the tastiest among these strange delights, this one is aptly named “express train” due to its length and wriggle speed. Fry or barbecue these fast cruisers and add a dash of salt. Suck down a few beers, sit back and snack
Silk Worm (non tua mai)
Non, the Thai word for worm, tua means bean, and mai is the Thai word for silk (not to be confused with the mai of another tone, which means wood).
Mole Crickets (maeng jon)
Oooh, is this one ugly! Slow roast ‘em, add a touch of seasoning and show them who’s boss.
