Discovering

Text: W.B. Images: Karin
Chiang Mai is fast becoming one of the most
famous tourist attractions in Asia, with more and more tourist attractions opening to serve tourists from all around the world.
Chiang Mai Zoo has been one of the city's most famous attractions for both domestic and overseas tourists for the past 30 years. Set on over 200 acres of land, it offers homes to over 8,000 animals, which tourists can observe in an evergreen environment comprising of two waterfalls, reservoirs, an open park and many all-season spots perfect for chilling out.
Chiang Mai Zoo has recently expanded to include an Aquarium, which is a must-see attraction here given that it boasts the world's longest underwater tunnel. The tunnel is separated into two compartments; the first is 66.5 meter long named 'Under the Mekong' (exhibiting fresh water fish) and ‘Under the Ocean’ (exhibiting lives under the sea) is equal in length to the first. Over 20,000 marine creatures are exhibited in a gigantic water tank, which tourists can observe for as long as they like. The Mekong exhibit encompasses a vast system of tributaries that stretches from the Tibetan plateau and across five countries - China, Burma, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia - before spilling into the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. Under the Ocean carries you through the tunnel enclosure that runs through the deepest depths of this area and the climax is the Eagle Ray flying with friends, the Leopard Shark, followed by a parade of a thousand other underwater animals. The total area of 13,895 square metres is separated into many different exhibits such as a reception hall, Inthanon Mountain park, flooded forest, reptile & insect zone, dangerous fish tank and more.
Besides exhibiting marine creatures, Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium offers more activities to tourists. Snorkeling allows visitors to get closer to the under water world in either the fresh or salt water tank. Diving suites, equipment and a well-trained diving guide are provided for all divers. To make sure that you get a chance to pick which tank you want to dive in, a reservation should be made in advance. "Under Water Dancing" from an international award-winning athlete is
another famous activity at the Aquarium. There is no extra charge to attend the show, so make sure to check the schedule, as you don't want to miss this spectacular event. Feeding shows are also scheduled every day in both tanks.
Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium is located inside Chiang Mai Zoo; Huay Kaew Rd., near Chiang Mai University, before going up to Doi Suthep Temple. For updated information on show schedules, entrance fees, special shows and promotions, please call Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium at 053 893 111 or visit www.chiangmaiaquarium.com.
