Just Look... Here! Words with ‘Mae’
Text: GM
Celebrating the Queen’s Birthday and Mother’s Day on the 12th of this month
The words ‘mother, mom, mum, momma and mama’ all mean a woman who has given birth, or who is a head of something. In Thai, the word covering all these variants is ‘mae’, which is widely compounded with other words to give different meanings. These compound words all refer in some way to a woman’s role and power in Thai - and Southeast Asian - culture.
This Just Look Here focuses on six Thai compound words preceded by the syllable mae.
 1. Mae Khun Jae (Master key)
Khun Jae is a key so Mae Khun Jae refers to a key used to open many different locks in a building.
 2. Mae Baan (Housewife)
‘Baan’ means ‘home’, so Mae Baan is a woman who looks after a home and does housework. She is the mistress (in the old meaning of the word) of her house.
 3. Mae Raeng (Hand jack)
The word ‘raeng’ refers to power. Mae Raeng is a small instrument used for lifting up enormous things, like cars.
 4. Mae Lek (Magnet)
The word ‘lek’ means iron. Mae Lek is also iron but it can attract objects made of iron toward it - hence, magnet.
 5. Mae Kaa (Seller, Shopkeeper)
Kaa refers to selling and a Mae Kaa is a woman who sells goods, especially in markets.
 6. Mae Si (Primary color)
The word ‘si’ in thai refers to all of the colors, but Mae Si refers only to the three primary colors - red, yellow and blue.
