THE GOOD VIEW

For a long time one of the superior eating places in Chiang Mai has been the Good View Restaurant.

For a long time one of the superior eating places in Chiang Mai has been the Good View Restaurant. Ideally situated on the banks of the Ping River, you can sit back, relax, and watch the river flow and the odd boat or two go by.

.gif It had been a while since I had visited, and there have been some rather nice changes made, the main one being the opening of the river side of the restaurant so that one may enjoy the above. They have two excellent bands that play music continually until closing time, whenever that is, which I don’t know as I have never stayed to the finish. They play a good range of tunes, mainly of Western origin although some Thai songs sneak in now and then. The menu is a large and varied one, and has a number of items that are rarely seen elsewhere, a touch of which I am rather fond.

.gif For example there is coconut sprouts with prawn sala;and stir-fried sliced pork in ground peppers for starters, and very tempting they were too. I also cast my eye over some steamed cuttlefish in chilli and lemon sauce, which I have never tried but passed over for the moment. Deep fried Chinese mushroom with garlic and pepper sounded like a very healthy way to go as did spicy winged beans in prawn salad, and fried sayote leaves with oyster sauce. However, as I do not know what sayote leaves were I passed by them also. What I finally could not resist was the whole baked pork hock with mashed potatoes and coleslaw. Now there is a dish fit for the most fastidious gourmet, with the pork rind baked to a genuine crisp that has a flavour like nothing else.

.gif As this is such a large serving I only ordered two additional dishes, one, the almost mandatory tom yum goong; that special spicy Thai dish that has unequalled taste with deliciously large prawns included. The other, which I thought sensible, was a Khantoke plate that included naem, the fermented Thai sausage, sai oua, another Thai sausage, some fried pork patties plus selected vegetables.

.gifThis was sensible as one can pick the items slowly between rations of the other foods. Naturally enough, these were assisted by a couple of glasses of icy cold Singha beer, straight from the tap, which is the only way for true beer connoisseurs to drink. So, all in all, a very pleasant evening with good food, agreeable music and a pleasant riverside atmosphere. As I said earlier, the Good View Restaurant is one of the superior places to take your friends, visitors, or simply go by yourself and enjoy the evening.
