THE JAZZ
ROYALE FESTIVAL
Definitely out of the ordinary - two evenings (14th & 15 Dec) of jazz in the grounds of the Chiang Mai University Art Museum, organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand to celebrate the King's Birthday, and with BIG NAME performers. The first evening kicks off at 6 p.m. with Georgie Fame and Ahmad Jamal, no less, followed at 8.20 by the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band (James Moody and Roberta Gambarini fronting), while Kenny G. - yes, you heard me - Kenny G. winds it all up with his magic sax from 9.30 till half past ten.
The second evening gets under way with the Regina Carter Quintet at 6 p.m. The McCoy Tyner Trio follow at 7.15 and then - WOW! - an hour of Nancy Wilson. Marta Topferova follows at 9.30 and the show's brought to a grand crescendo, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band with James Moody, Roberta Gambarini, Paquito D'Rivera and Claudio Roditi, taking us starry-eyed up to and beyond midnight. Ticket 1,500 baht per night. More info at TAT Northern Office 053-248604. See you there!
The Chiang Mai Red Cross and Winter Fair
Actually, there are two opinions about this one. One says: Held at the Salaklang (Provincial Town Hall) about 6 kms out on the Mae Rim Road, the CM Winter Fair, (31st Dec - 12th Jan.) is mainly for the young and strong at heart – a bit like the Songkran Festival. If you like noise, dust, crowds, lots of sticky things to eat and plenty of superfluous things to buy, this is definitely for you. The other says: Gardeners will love it, as there are lots of flowers and plants on sale. Kids will enjoy the cute railway rumbling round the site. The Ghost House is a scream, and the what-nots on sale are amazingly various. And who can resist looking in on the stage performances and the Miss Chiang Mai Beauty Contest in the the evening? Certainly worth visiting, and don't forget your camera!
