Lanna Music and Associated Arts

Nothing gives you a better feeling for the uniqueness of Lanna culture than getting to hear the music of this region, and seeing the performances of the dancing and dramas that go with it.

Watch the slow, graceful, circular dances of the young women, beautifully dressed in the traditional styles, and especially accoutred - with long nails, candles etc - with which they make mesmeric movements, and you will feel that you couldn’t be anywhere else. Partly this is mistaken, though, for what seems to be uniquely Lanna in style, often has its own blends from other cultural influences - Burmese, for example, and Central Thai. Nevertheless, in its cultural combining, something special is created, and Chiang Mai is the place to see it, and the time is now.

Just outside the city to the north, on the road to Mae Rim, is the Darapirom Palace. It used to be the Palace of the consort of King Chulalongkorn the Great (Rama V), Princess Dararatsami. It’s an elegant building, with a museum dedicated to her memory, exhibiting all kinds of old furniture, pictures and instruments. Princess Dararatsami, herself born to the Chiang Mai Royal Family, was a great supporter of Northern arts and culture. You will have a chance to hear some Northern Thai music and see some Lanna dancing as well as an exhibition featuring Lanna culture that will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the museum until the end of August.
