THE HOME

.gifI must admit, the Home Restaurant can be a little hard to find if you don’t already know the location, as I found out myself; but that’s another story.

Actually, it is situated in Chaiyaphum Road down a small laneway (not a soi) just before you get to Rydges Hotel on the way to Tha Phae Gate.

.gifThere is a sign on the roadside, which helps. My appointment there was lunchtime one, and very pleasant it was too. You come to the restaurant at the end of the laneway and it is situated beneath a large Thai style wooden house in a comfortable garden surround. Though the menu is almost entirely Thai food, with the exception of large or small European breakfasts, there were some surprises that I had not before encountered.

.gifFor example, stir-fried pumpkin with pork and egg I had not seen before, nor red curry with pork and ginger. It was nice to see a red-hot spicy curry on the menu for a change, as they can be hard to find in Chiang Mai. I cast an eye over a green curry with banana flower and pork and an asparagus with shrimps and even a pork with chilli and onion. However, as this was lunchtime, and there was an afternoon’s work to be done, I leant towards a lighter type of fare and selected stir fried chicken with cashew nuts and green and red peppers, (which, in Australia, we call capsicum).

.gifI simply cannot resist at least one kind of curry when I am in a restaurant such as this so tried a gaeng kae Lanna, or curry with chicken and a selection of local vegetables. I confess a pleasant surprise to find that this dish was surprisingly fiery, which is as unusual as it was delicious. As a side dish I chose nam prik ong, which is a spicy minced pork dip that is eaten with deep fried pork rind, beans, cucumber or simply by itself. All of the above was as delightful as one would expect in a place such as this. It is owned and operated by Khun Taeng and it is obvious she has been in the business for a number of years. When you go there you will no doubt be surprised at the prices.

.gif For food of this quality the cost is remarkably inexpensive, which tends to make it all the nicer. Also, the atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing with some gentle background music, and you are just far enough away from the road not to be influenced by traffic noise. All in all, a most agreeable time with good food, good and smiling service, and in an enjoyable setting. Take my word for it, drop along yourself and see what I mean.
