Camping & Trekking equipment
Text: GM
This month’s lead story guides you on a trekking trip to Chiang Dao. Well, what do we need to pack to get ready? We know that packing things for trekking in a backpack is totally different from drive-and-camp in a provided camping area in some national park. For this sort of outing, you’d better bring only what you need, because one kilogram once you start walking will weigh like 10 after a few hours have passed.
Space Dome Tent
- for 2 persons.
What are the necessary things good trekkers carry with them?
Tent or Hammock
There’s no need to carry a big heavy tent unless you plan to share it with friends. Choose a waterproof one which is light and easy to set up. Sometimes, if you don’t have enough space to set up a tent, a hammock is also very handy but you should choose one with a mosquito net.
Sleeping Bag
Even though it’s summer, the weather in the forest or up in the hills can be really chilly. Choose one that’s light and small when folded.
Ocean Pack Waterproof bag
- Keep your valuables(i.e. camera, identity docs), away from water.
Sleeping Mat or Flysheet
A flysheet is very useful to cover your tent from rain or dew and can be used as a relaxing area during the day.
Cookware and Camp Kitchen
Bring only what you use. A small pot is fine with spoon, fork and knife. You can kindle a fire but right now boy scouting can be made a lot easier with a little gas stove.
Mini gas
Water Bottle or Water Filter and Purifier (optional)
Don’t bring a big torch/flashlight. The forest at night is very dark, and just a small one is fine. Water resistance in a flashlight is very desireable if you intend to wash in the dark. (But then, why not wait till you get home?).
Clothes and Underwear
One set for day-time and one for the night. That’s all. For underwear, bring enough for each day. Anti-leech socks many be needed in some areas.
Outdoor Chair (But forget it, unless you’ve got porters)
Comfortable Trekking Shoes
You don’t have to buy water-resistant shoes because when trekking you may have to walk through rivers or up waterfalls, where your water-resistant shoes will not repel but hold the water. Choose a pair that are quick-dry.
Life Commodities
Don’t forget tissue paper, soap, toothpaste, etc.
Ultralight Sleeping Bag
- This sleeping bag is very small when folded and thick enough to keep you warm.
A good backpack
Don’t save just a little money buying a poor quality one.
A backpack is very important and you’re going to be carrying it hours at a time. Get one that’s strong but also light weight.
