Flower Festival

The cool season is a great time to visit Chiang Mai as there are a lot of events planned throughout the
season. For those who visit Chiang Mai at the beginning of February, Chiang Mai residents cordially welcome you to the most colorful festival of the year, the Flower Festival.
The flower festival is an important annual event normally held in the first weekend of February. The festival includes ornamental garden flower contests, a floral float parade in the morning and beauty pageants. The parade begins at Chiang Mai Railway Station, crosses over the Nawarat Bridge and ends at Suan Buak Public Park located in the old city.
Suan Buak Haad is the centre of the festival, with the flower contests being held here; miniature trees and orchids are put on display for the judges to decide which the best in show is.
Landscape specialists put on elaborate displays, including patios and waterfalls with decorative plants and flowers. Award winners from the contests are on display for three days alongside many other types of flower.
The 33rd Flower Festival this year is from 6 to 8 February 2009. The beauty pageants will be on Friday February 6 and this year is special because there will be a Miss International Flower Bloom Beauty Contest which foreigners can participate in. The
official opening ceremony is on Saturday 7th, the highlight of which is a performance which combines traditional Lanna dance with
contemporary Central Thai dance, and the parade will also be held on this day.
