DESTINATION: Ban Saonak
Text & Images: Jiratorn S.
Apart from being well known for its horse carriages and ceramics, Lampang, located just two hours from Chiang Mai, also features several interesting buildings showing Burmese architectural influence.
One which is well worth visiting is Ban Saonak.
Authentic interior
As the term Ban Saonak in the Northern dialect refers to a house with many columns, it’s no surprise to find the building - fronted by a magnificent 133-year-old Sarapee tree - has16 finely-made teakwood columns supporting it. Constructed in 1895 by Mong Chan Ong, an ancestor of the Chantara Chawiroj family, the house stands on the north side of Khelang Bridge over the Wang River in Ma O Community. It was in this district that the Burmese started their timber business with English people during the colonial period. This is why we see Burmese and Lanna architectural features in a building that also displays the influence of the colonial style.
In the old days, this building was the residence for official guests of the city and also the venue for several cultural occasions. As visitors, we can admire its gracious style, along with the antique furniture and period adjuncts between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm daily. Admission costs 30 baht / person with a free complimentary drink and snacks included. For more
information, call 054-227653 and 054-224636.
