Gourmet Visits
Part of the Jirung Health Resort, the restaurant is situated in the foothills of Doi Suthep and overlooks the lake fed by natural spring water.
The setting is simply delightful, especially if you go there in the early evening before the sun has set, for it is then you will get the full understanding of peace and quiet accompanied by good service and friendly faces. Although it may be a little way from town, please believe me when I tell you that it is well worth the twenty, or twenty-five minute trip. You turn left at the Samoeng Road, then take the first turn right and follow your instincts, go across a small bridge, and there you are. To go right along with the pleasant trip you will have the pleasure of seeing Doi Suthep towering above you and the North Road in the distance below.
And, as one would expect, the restaurant and the food match the surroundings. As I was not alone but had the company of photographer, Mim, and the Spa Consultant of the Health Resort, Patrick Cusick with me, we had the pleasure of being able to try a variety of dishes. As it is part of the resort, it was nice to be able to attempt some varieties of cuisine I had not before encountered as well as some of my favourites. One of the newer items was pickled garlic, fried with egg, which had the tangy flavour of the garlic without the after-taste. Another was momordica and pork soup. I’m not quite certain as to what momordica is other than a vegetable; and yet another was kaeng som kung, a sweet and sour curry with prawns. Khun Patrick informs me, by the way, that all vegetables are bought daily from the Mae Rim Market to ensure freshness. Others I had tried only rarely were tom kha gai, chicken soup with coconut cream, and fried fish with Chinese celery.
Then came one of my real favourite, stir-fried glass noodles with salted egg. I’m not sure why, but there is something special about glass noodles that I cannot resist, so I didn’t. Last but certainly not least, was the fried chicken with ginger. Ginger can be an excellent additive to many dishes, and adds a genuine piquancy, provided it does not dominate the taste, as sometimes happens. In this case it was just right, so all was well. All in all, it would be difficult to find a more appropriate spot for an interesting and relaxing evening out. I highly recommend it, so be sure to give it a try whenever you get the chance.
